Sibanye-Stillwater strike | Miner hits back at Mantashe

JOHANNESBURG – Mining giant Sibanye-Stillwater says it will consider legal action if Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe withdraws its gold mining rights.

The Minister’s remarks saw jaws drop on Thursday when he suggested in Parliament that if Sibanye is willing to stop gold mining during its wage battle, the company’s mining rights should be relooked at.

He pointed to Section 47 of the Mineral & Petroleum Resources Development Act, which empowers the minister to suspend or cancel a miner’s licence if it fails to fulfil its obligations.

Sibanye says it is shocked by the remarks.
