Numsa disrupts start of the Saftu conference

JOHANNESBURG – Irvin Jim and his union Numsa won some ground at the start of the second congress of trade union Saftu.

The conference was disrupted by delegates calling for the suspended leadership to sit.

They were suspended over a decision to place Saftu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi on precautionary suspension.

Jim opposed the conference being chaired by Saftu acting president Atwell Nazo.

Vavi and Jim have been at loggerheads in recent months over Saftu’s future.

Numsa is Saftu’s biggest affiliate and has 40-percent of the 708 voting delegates attending the elective conference.
