Earlier today, journalist Gerard Romero claimed that Barcelona are interested in signing Villarreal midfielder Dani Parejo in the summer transfer window to reinforce the midfield pivot position.
The 33-year-old has been a top player in La Liga for years and with there being some doubts over the continuity of Sergio Busquets at Camp Nou, Parejo has emerged as a possible target for the Catalan giants.
However, Javi Miguel of AS is claiming that Barcelona will consider the signing of Parejo only if Busquets leaves at the end of the season.
The Blaugrana captain is out of contract at the end of the season and has been heavily linked with a move to the MLS, with Inter Miami showing interest in securing his services as a free agent.
At the same time, Saudi Arabian giants Al Nassr are also making overtures towards Busquets, although the midfielder has turned down a massive offer from them.
Xavi, for his part, wants to keep hold of his captain for another season and has asked the club to offer him a one-year extension. The report from Javi Miguel claims that the Barcelona manager trusts that Busquets will remain at the club for one more campaign.
In that case, the current La Liga leaders will not consider making a move for Parejo. But, if Busquets does not renew and decides to move on at the end of the season, the possibility of signing the Villarreal veteran will be studied.
At 33, the Spaniard will hardly be a long-term solution for Barça. But his arrival would allow the club a buffer period of a year or two to scout, identify and sign the ideal long-term replacement for Busquets.
However, any move in the summer will depend on what the captain decides.
