Chilling moment Plymouth gunman Jake Davison strolled along the road wielding shotgun

Footage of an ‘incel’ mass murderer’s eight-minute killing spree which claimed the lives of five people – including a toddler pushing her teddy in a pram – has been shown to an inquest jury.

In the chilling clips, Jake Davison, 22, is seen wielding his firearm in the streets around his home in Plymouth, Devon, as he indiscriminately shoots innocent bystanders on August 12, 2021.

The video is a collation of CCTV, doorbell and bodycam footage as well as audio from 999 calls, and was shown to the jury for the first time on Wednesday.

In the footage, apprentice crane operator Davison is seen arriving home in his work clothes. It is there where he first killed his own mother Maxine, 51, shooting her dead following a row, before leaving the property to hunt more victims.

In the minutes that followed Davison shot dead strangers Sophie Martyn, three, and her father Lee Martyn, 43, on the street as they were walking their dog.

He then killed Stephen Washington, 59, a full-time carer for his wife, by shooting him in the chest in a nearby park as he walked his two dogs.

Artist Katherine Shepherd, 66, was then shot, and later died, at Derriford Hospital from a gunshot wound to her stomach.

A 33-year-old man, and a 53-year-old woman, were also shot and wounded before Davison turned the gun on himself and ended his own life.

The footage, captured mostly on a neighbours’ CCTV, begins with Davison returning home at 3.22pm. Maxine Davison then leaves for a dental appointment before returning to the property in Biddick Drive.

At 6.05pm, Maxine called her sister Marlene Hill, who then called 999 and is heard saying: ‘Her son has got mental health problems. He has grabbed her by the throat and is not messing around.’

Jake is then seen on CCTV leaving the house at 6.08pm holding his shotgun after shooting his mother twice and leaving her for dead in a bedroom.

At this point, Sophie and Lee Martyn were walking along Royal Navy Avenue and into Linear Park as they continued into Biddick Drive.

The inquest heard Lee was walking the family dog Mabel – while Sophie pushed her teddy along in a pram – holding her father’s hand.

At 6.09pm Davison killed them by shooting Lee three times and Sophie once – firstly at a range of 20m and then at 1m.

At this point, the first 999 calls from neighbours are reported about a shooting in the street.

One says: ‘I heard a bang. The person who done it lives at number 17 Biddick Drive.

‘I think his name is Jake something. I heard a bang and thought what the hell is that.’

Another caller said: ‘He has gone up the back of Biddick Drive – shooting other people I think. With an automatic weapon, he was just firing all the time.

At 6.15pm unarmed police officers arrived on the scene and started giving her first aid.

Seven minutes later Davison walks back on Bedford Street towards Henderson Place.

He is seen on CCTV holding the gun to his throat and at 6.24pm he shoots himself on the corner of Bedford Street and Henderson Place.

Police bodycam footage captures the moment he ends his life with an officer heard shouting ‘A man has shot himself in the head.’

Davison died from a self-inflicted wound.

Investigator David Miller, case officer with major crimes team, ran through the CCTV today (Wed) and said: ‘A maximum of eight minutes elapsed between the first and last shooting.’

The inquest for the victims began at Exeter Racecourse yesterday (Tues) and the coroner said it would concerns from the families at why Davison was ever allowed to legally own a firearm under a sporting licence.

The gun was even confiscated by cops following an accusation of assault made against him – but given back to Davison shortly before the tragedy.

Earlier in the inquest statements were read on behalf of the families of all the victims.

Josh Davison, the son of Maxine and brother of Jake, said: ‘Our involvement in this inquest is to help prevent this happening in future – an event like this cannot and should not happen again.

‘If we had one wish it would be we could turn back time and allow everyone who had a part in the events leading up to this tragedy an opportunity to make changes to prevent it happening at all.’

Further harrowing details about Rebecca Martyn, the wife of Lee and mother of Sophie, revealed the tot had been walking a teddy in her pram at the time she was shot.

They had been walking the family British bulldog Mabel at the time.
