Prince Harry drops 45 points and Meghan Markle 36 points in a month in US poll

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have seen their popularity plummet in the United States in just over a month, following the release of his controversial tell-all memoir, Spare.

The couple, who were previously hugely popular in the U.S., have sunk in the polls since Prince Harry launched a fresh attack on the royal family and revealed a range of intimate details such as how he lost his virginity in his new tell-all memoir.

Prior to publication, Harry had a favorability rating of +38, according to a December 5 poll of 2,000 U.S. voters for Newsweek.

That has now plunged to -7, with pollsters Redfield & Wilton speaking to the same number of voters on January 16.

His wife has also seen her reputation harmed by the drama. She now has an approval rating of -13, compared to +23 on December 5.

Spare became the fastest-selling non-fiction book of all time on the day of its release earlier this month, topping sales charts around the world – including in the U.S., according to its publisher.

In it Harry made explosive revelations and allegations about members of his family, most noticeably his brother Prince William, rocking the House of Windsor.

It has also put in jeopardy the family’s chance to set aside their differences at the coronation of Prince Charles III later this year.

The poll, which was made up of 2,000 US voters, marks a serious backslide in ratings for the couple, who moved to the country after stepping back from royal duties in March 2020.

The poll also found women were slightly less likely to like Markle than men.

Asked about whether Harry was right to reveal intimate conversations with his family members in the memoir, 44 percent said he was wrong, with 26 percent saying he was right.

Redfield & Wilton’s poll also found that only a third of the population had not heard anything about the contents of the book.

Harry has been on a media blitz since the book came out, taking part in interviews with Anderson Cooper for 60 Minutes, Michael Strahan for Good Morning America, and Stephen Colbert for his late night comedy show.

Yet even some who previously supported the prince are beginning to say that the memoir is excessive, and unnecessarily brutal towards his family.

The New York Times concludes: ‘At once emotional and embittered, the royal memoir is mired in a paradox: drawing endless attention in an effort to renounce fame.’

New York Magazine’s The Cut branded Prince Harry’s book ‘pure chaos’, while mocking his ‘frostbitten penis’ and ‘shrooms trip’ in a scathing Instagram post.

The statement comes just five months after Markle posed on the cover of the magazine and sat down with it for an interview in which she spoke openly about her time as a royal as well as her and Harry’s decision to leave the monarchy.

Vox magazine, meanwhile, was scathing in its review.

‘It feels like a diatribe from someone who has only recently learned that it is physically possible to talk openly about his life and his anger, and who now has no idea how to modulate himself,’ wrote critic Constance Grady.

‘The result is occasionally insufferable, but also oddly fascinating. At times you wonder if it should ever have been made public.’

In Forbes magazine, Harry and Meghan were described as ‘a brand in panic’.

‘It’s painful to watch Prince Harry inadvertently commit brand suicide with his new book Spare in hopes of building his own brand,’ wrote Jeetendr Sehdev.

And Jimmy Kimmel this week mercilessly mocked Harry’s revelation that he rubbed his mother’s favorite Elizabeth Arden lip cream on his penis to cure frostbite.

In a scathing rendition, the talk show host ridiculed Harry by producing a book titled ‘The Prince and the Penis’ in which the Duke of Sussex calls out for the late Princess Diana to help with his frostbitten penis.

Kimmel sparked eruptions of laughter as he read out the story, which features cartoon drawings of Harry and his frostbitten penis, where the late Princess Diana produced Elizabeth lip cream for Harry to put on his frostbitten penis.

In the book, Harry’s character, questioning whether it was acceptable to put his mother’s lip cream on his penis, said: ‘But mummy have you heard about Sir Sigmund Freud?’

The audience burst into raucous laughter as the talk show host continued to ridicule the Prince in a two-minute monologue.

It comes as the couple become increasingly unpopular in the UK, with recent polling for MailOnline revealing 56 percent of people believe they should lose all their royal titles and patronages.

Among young people, the monarchy itself is also becoming less and less welcomed.

The poll, by YouGov on behalf of MailOnline, also reveals that Harry’s attacks on Charles, his brother William and sister-in-law Kate have not changed the public’s perception of them at all. Kate’s polling improved.

The Prince of Wales’ polling remains strong despite being accused of attacking his younger sibling after a blazing row where he called Meghan ‘difficult’ and ‘abrasive’.

Meanwhile Prince Harry’s approval ratings dropped to a record low of -44.

In the memoir, Prince Harry alleged that his brother shoved him into a dog’s bowl during the heated row after he began dating Meghan, leaving it in ‘pieces’.

He claimed he could tell Prince William wanted him to hit him back, but he refused to do so. He added his brother later apologized.

He also revealed personal details such as how he lost his virginity to an older woman in a field behind a pub.

In his new book, Harry claims members of the royal household regularly briefed to the press, including for negative articles about Meghan.

Harry has been criticized for sharing private conversations in the book, and intimate details about his family members.

However, the prince claimed there are many other details he has chosen not to share because ‘I just don’t want the world to know’, adding his family might not ‘ever forgive’ him if he did so.

Harry has since challenged his family members to speak with him and apologize to Meghan, though it is not clear what for.
